"This is still the largest rodeo in the world from a competitor's standpoint," Event Center Executive Director Amy Dickerson said during a presentation Tuesday to Lancaster County Commissioners.
The County Council signed off on two grants of nearly $3 million to pay for most of the center's improvements to accommodate the rodeo. The money comes from the Visitor Improvement Fund, which collects lodging tax revenue. About $190,000 will be transferred from funds earmarked for Event Center improvements, of which $2.8 million will be new grant dollars.
But the grants come with one important condition: The Lancaster Events Center must be chosen to host the rodeo.
The National High School Rodeo Association won't make a decision until mid-January, but Dickerson said putting in the money to show interest in supporting the rodeo is key to getting it.
