LANSING, Michigan – Members of the Michigan National Guard now have another tool to improve their military careers through Innovation's recently developed General Technical Improvement Course (GTIC).

U.S. Created by Chief Warrant Officer 4 John Laliberte, Michigan National Guard, GTIC is designed to help service members improve their overall technical score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test (ASVAB) and gradually provide additional options for career development and assignments. .

Army Guard Puts Its Best To The Test

Similar to GTIC's Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST) program, GTIC's unique name serves a primary purpose.

"The General Technical (GT) is a sub-component of the ASVAB that the military uses to distinguish between Officer Candidate School (OCS) or enlisted," Laliberte said. "Soldiers need a GT score of 110 or higher to become an officer."

The GTIC is attractive to service members interested in career-expanding opportunities that require high ASVAB scores.

"There are three reasons Soldiers go on this course," Laliberte said. "Getting a GT score of 110 to become an officer or a non-commissioned officer." Other reasons include changing their MOS or attending military schools that require certain scores.

Recruiter: Military Testing Requirements Have Evolved

Overall, GTIC creates immediate and tangible results that underline the success of this opportunity. Prior to full implementation in fiscal year 2020, the program ran a 12-month pilot program with positive results.

"Soldiers averaged a 13-point increase in score on the overall technical portion of the ASVAB," Laliberte said. "The impact is significant because Soldiers who want to join NCOs now have the opportunity to attend OCS."

While many soldiers take this course, a soldier who recently joined the Michigan National Guard took this opportunity to advance his career and fulfill his dream of becoming an officer.

"The GTIC course I signed up for was specifically designed to increase my GT score," says U.S. Staff Sgt. Carl Matthews, supply sergeant, 277th Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Michigan National Guard.

Michigan National Guard Paves Path For Career Progression

Mathews, who increased his GT score by 18% after completing GTIC, said he is leaving for OCS in the near future with the goal of influencing policy and working in logistics.

The former supply specialist turned recruiter has a bachelor's degree in special education, but needed this five-day course to focus on the GT portion of the ASVAB in a distraction-free environment.

"I had studied (for the ASVAB) before, but I didn't get the practice test results," Matthews said. "It was a way for me to block it all out and focus on the ASVAB test," he said.

Another benefit of GTIC and increasing ASVAB scores may come under retention. According to the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Strategic Plan, the preservation of Michigan National Guard Soldiers is a top priority.

Recruiting And Retention

Active & Prior Service

This is a frequently asked question, but the ASVAB test is not in any other language. Service manuals, technical manuals, operating instructions etc. are written in English. You must be able to function in English, so the ASVAB test is given in English only. If you score high enough on the ASVAB and your native language is not English, you may be tested for the English Comprehension Level (ECL) test. ECL is a standardized test that measures your listening and reading skills. Depending on your test results, you may receive further testing and further training.

If you are 17 or older, you can process with MEPS using student ASVAB scores from the test you took in high school at age 16. If you are a junior or senior when you appear for the exam and the exam has not expired (two years from the date of exam).

You can take the ASVAB as early as your sophomore year in high school. However, if you take the ASVAB as a sophomore, your score will not be used to add up. If necessary, you can take the ASVAB again after 30 days - again after 30 days.
