The Electric Boat will handle approximately 78 percent of the Columbia class's construction and has recently moved the program to full-scale construction at the company's manufacturing facility in Kwonset Point, Rhode Island. Four of the six supermodules will be built at Electric Boat's Quonset Point facility. The supermodules will then be transported by barge to the final test and assembly site in Groton, Connecticut, where the parts will be assembled into a complete submarine at a 200,000-square-foot facility currently under construction for the Columbia class.

General Dynamics recently reported that the design timeline for Columbia is about 90 percent complete, which is nearly twice the completion date of the Virginia-class submarine when construction begins.

“Electric Ship has been preparing for the construction of the Columbia class for nearly a decade, including advancing the design of this critical fleet, hiring and training thousands of skilled professionals, modernizing our facilities and strengthening our supply base.” "Columbia's design is more advanced than previous submarines," said Kevin Graney, head of Electric Boat, General Dynamics.

With a length of 150 meters and a displacement of approximately 21,000 tons, the Columbia-class submarines will be the largest submarines ever built by the United States. Columbia-class submarines will have a lifetime nuclear fuel cell that will power the submarine throughout its life, eliminating the need for mid-service fuel. Over the life of the Virginia program, shipbuilders have increased delivery times in Block I from 88 months to the current average of 68 months, doubling submarine construction to two ships per year, and steadily increasing ship capacity.

Eight of the ships to be built for Block V will include the Virginia Propulsion Module (VPM), which will build the Electric Ship at a recently built facility in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The VPM consists of four spaced large-diameter load-bearing pipes that will increase the ship's rated thrust capacity by more than 230 percent. Developed by the electric ship, the VPM will enable more widespread use of special operations forces and allow the Navy to carry additional weapons, sensors and other special payloads.

Electric Ship and Newport News Shipbuilding have already delivered 18 Virginia-class submarines to the Navy, and all 10 Block IV submarines are currently under construction. The Virginia class submarines are 377 feet long and 34 feet in diameter and displace 7,800 tons. With the VPM, the submarines will have a displacement of 10,200 tons and a length of 460 feet. It has speeds in excess of 25 knots and can dive to depths of more than 250 meters, carrying Mark 48 advanced torpedoes, Tomahawk land attack missiles and unmanned underwater vehicles.
