The AC-130 is armed with a massive array of weapons, including a 105mm cannon and 25 or 40mm cannons.
The AC-130U uses synthetic aperture radar to detect and identify targets at long range and in adverse weather conditions. Navigation devices on the AC-130 include inertial navigation systems and global positioning systems. Two AC-130s use the latest technology and can attack two targets simultaneously.
Spooky (U-type) is the third generation of C-130 warships. All warships evolved from the first operational warship, the AC-47
The AC-130 gunship has a combat history dating back to Vietnam. The warplanes destroyed over 10,000 trucks and were credited with numerous close air support rescue missions. During Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, AC-130s suppressed enemy air defense systems and engaged ground forces enabling a successful air-to-air attack on Point Salines by friendly forces. The AC-130 flight crew was awarded the award of Lieutenant General William H. task tuner.

The AC-130s also played a major role during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989 when it destroyed the Panamanian Defense Force headquarters and several command and control facilities. The aircrews were awarded the Mackay Trophy for Flight of the Year and the Tuner Award for their efforts.
During Operation Desert Storm, the AC-130s provided close air support and force protection (air base defense) for ground forces. The battleships were also used during Operations Hope Continues and United Shield in Somalia, providing close air support to UN ground forces. The warplanes also played a major role in supporting the NATO mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The AC-130N provided air interception against key targets in the Sarajevo area.
In 1997, the warplanes were diverted from Italy to provide combat air support to US and allied ground forces during the evacuation of American non-combatants in Albania and Liberia. The AC-130s were also part of the 1998 deployment of US forces to persuade Iraq to comply with UN weapons inspections. Most recently, AC-130U warships have supported Operation Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn, while both aircraft have been deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Finally, the AFSOC Armed Forces have also played a major role in the recent uprisings in the Middle East. Warplanes provide armed reconnaissance, interception, and direct support to ground forces engaged with enemy forces.

Canada has closed a deal for 88 US F-35 fighter jets, first four aircraft expected in 2026 with full operational capacity for the expected fleet between… Endurance, ground attack variant of the C-130 fixed-wing transport aircraft Hercules. It carries a wide range of ground attack weapons that are integrated with advanced ssors, fire control and navigation systems. Unlike modern fixed-wing military aircraft, the AC-130 relies on visual targeting. Its high altitude and low operating altitude of about 7,000 feet (2,100 m) make it an easy target, and close air support missions are usually carried out at night.
The aircraft is manufactured by Lockheed Martin, while Boeing is responsible for the conversion of warships and support aircraft.
The AC-130 was developed during the Vietnam War as "Project Gunship II", replacing the Douglas AC-47 Spooky or "Gunship I". The sole operator is the US Air Force, which operates the AC-130U Spooky and AC-130W Stinger II.
Close air support roles include ground force support, convoy escort, and urban operations. No-fly missions are carried out against planned targets and targets of opportunity. Force protection missions include clearing air bases and other facilities. The AC-130Us are based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, while the AC-130Ws are based at Cannon AFB, New Mexico; Armed ships can be deployed all over the world.

The squadrons are part of the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), which is part of the United States Special Operations Command.
The AC-130 has an unpressurized cabin, with weapons mounted to fire from the fuselage port. During the attack, the warship rotates a column, flying in a large circle around the target, so that it can shoot at it for much longer than the normal strike attack. The AC-130H Specter is armed with two M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon, one L/60 Bofors 40mm cannon and one M137 105mm cannon and an M37 recoil mechanism from an M102 howitzer; After 1994, the 20mm guns were removed. The upgraded AC-130U Spooky has one 25mm GAU-12 Equalizer cannon instead of two 20mm Spectre cannons, an improved fire control system and increased ammunition capacity.
The new AC-130J was based on the MC-130J Commando II special operations tanker. The AC-130W Stinger II is a modified C-130H with upgrades including a precision strike package.
During the Vietnam War, the C-130 Hercules was chosen to replace the Douglas AC-47 Spooky gunship (Project Gunship I) for improved endurance and increased ammunition carrying capacity. Capable of flying faster than helicopters and at higher altitudes with excellent timing, the use of pylon rotation allowed the AC-47 to deliver continuous and accurate fire to a single point on the ground.
Ac 130j Ghostrider Gunships Have Flown Their Very First Combat Missions
In 1967, JC-130A 54-1626 was selected for conversion to a prototype AC-130A gunship (Project Gunship II). The modifications were made at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base by the Air Systems Division. A forward-looking night-vision telescope is installed on the front door, and a forward-looking infrared device is installed in the front of the left wheel well, with small guns and rotating guns facing downward and backward on the left side. The analog manual fire control computer prototype was designed by RAF Wing Commander Tom Pinkerton at the USAF Avionics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB. Flight testing of the prototype took place primarily at Eglin Air Force Base, followed by additional testing and modifications. By September 1967, the aircraft was certified ready for combat testing and flown to Nha Trang Air Base, South Vietnam for a 90-day test programme.
The AC-130 was later complemented by the AC-119 Shadow (Project Gunship III), which later proved to be underpowered.
The Surprise Package upgrade included the newer 20mm revolving autocannons and 40mm Bofors rifles, but no 7.62mm close support. The surprise package configuration served as a test bed for the aircraft and armamt systems for the AC-130E. In 1970, another 10 AC-130As were purchased under the Buff Pronto project.
In the summer of 1971 Surprise Package AC-130s were converted to the Pave Pronto configuration and given the new nickname "Thor". The conversion of a C-130E to an AC-130E for the PAVE Specter project followed.
Ac 130 Spectre Gunship
Regardless of their project names, the aircraft was commonly referred to by the squadron's callsign, Spectre.
In 2007, AFSOC began a program to modernize the armament of the AC-130. The test program planned to replace the GAU-12 / U and 40-mm Bofors guns on the AC-130U warships with two 30-mm Mk 44 Bushmaster II guns.
In 2007, the Air Force modified four AC-130U warships as test platforms for Bushmasters. Designated AC-130U Plus 4 or AC-130U+4. However, AFSOC canceled plans to install the new guns
