Mbda's Newest Brimstone Missile Enters Raf Service

Britain has been supplying Ukraine with Brimstone missiles since April. Yesterday the UK Ministry of Defense officially confirmed what had been unofficially claimed based on photos, that Ukraine received not only the old Brimstone 1 but the newer and more capable Brimstone 2. As Russia's armed forces appear to be moving down the reform ladder, fielding increasingly outdated tanks and fielding soldiers with antiquated rifles, allies are supplying Ukraine with more sophisticated equipment. And Brimstone 2 is a very useful addition to the arsenal.

Anti-tank missiles - on the left - were originally designed to be carried on fixed-wing aircraft ... [+] but are used in a very different way in Ukraine.

The move could be prompted by how Ukraine modifies the original weapon. Although designed for use by helicopters and aircraft, Ukraine has developed a truck-mounted Brimstone launcher. This may be easier than matching NATO-class HARM missiles with incompatible Russian-made MiG aircraft, still a major task, and usually a Ukrainian upgrade.

Interestingly, the original Brimstone missile was designed to counter mass attacks by Soviet weapons. It is based on the Hellfire air-to-air missile system, which can also be launched from aircraft, but the issue is long range. The inferno reached about 8 km, putting the attacking aircraft very close to the Soviet mobile air defense system. Additionally, Hellfire requires laser guidance, meaning the launch or support aircraft need to be within visual range of the target and observe it during the attack.

Ukrainian Forces Have Made An Improvised, Truck Mounted Brimstone Missile Launcher

Brimstone brings two major improvements. One is the distance: 12 km from the hovering helicopter, 20 km from the plane. Another is the millimeter wave (MMW) guide. MMW sees in detail, and metal objects like tanks have a strong MMW signature. The MMW radar seeker allows the Brimstone to detect and identify targets in a special kill box from beyond line of sight, making it a true 'shoot and forget' missile and allowing attack aircraft to remain clear. This also means that Brimstones can be fired in salvos, with multiple missiles each finding their own target. (The smart triage algorithm means that each missile goes to a different target, and they can distinguish and prioritize different types of vehicles, for example go to high-value command vehicles first, then tanks and weapons and other trucks last).

In a test in 2005, 30 out of 31 Brimstones hit the target, an impressive success rate of better than 96%. In 2016, Boeing

A flight test engineer described this hit on the tank (quoted in this Tweet) by the self-guided Brimstone as “the most powerful shot I've ever seen in my 30 years in the Apache.

The feared Soviet invasion never happened. What was needed in the 2000s were laser-guided precision weapons for Iraq and Afghanistan, which operators could point at specific buildings or trenches. The Brimstone has been redesigned as a dual-mode weapon with laser guidance and an MMW seeker acting as an alternative.

Brimstone: An Advanced Air Launched Anti Armour Missile

We do not know how Brimstone has been used in Ukraine and whether it requires a laser beam to illuminate the target. But according to the creators, the original fire-and-forget mode is still available with software modifications. Why not enter it normally? That would make Brimstone an autonomous weapon, a flying killer robot that seeks out and engages targets without human intervention. And that is still a very controversial issue.

Brimstone 2 features two significant improvements over 1. The guidance system is greatly improved against "challenging targets" (for example, targets that are hidden or visible at odd angles) and the new Roxel rocket booster increases by "more than 200 %" the reported range. as 40 km from a helicopter and 60 km from an airplane. The ground launch distance should be the same as the helicopter.

From a distance of 40 km, laser guidance requires long-range drones with innovations such as the Bayraktar TB2. MMW guidance may be more practical. This would allow missiles to shoot down not only tanks and personnel carriers but high-value units such as autonomous weapons, and surface-to-air missile systems and command vehicles behind the front lines.
