Portland Zoo Lights

I've been there too! But going to ZooLights with the kids this year was my absolute best, and I'm happy to share with you the tips and insider recommendations I used to make this Portland holiday event a great one to remember.

My family received free tickets to the Oregon ZooLights Zoo. As always, the opinions in this family travel blog are purely my own and I'm only sharing experiences that I know you'll appreciate too.

We usually say no to family events that might affect girls' bedtimes, but we're making an exception for ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo. Here's how to make this Portland holiday event go smoothly.

This year the temperature was 48 degrees when my family went to ZooLights, but we dressed for a day in the mountains! I took the kids (and me) off their snow pants, put on a hat and gloves and made sure everyone was warm.

The Oregon Zoo tends to be about 5 degrees colder than other areas in Portland, so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that you will be outside for 1.5-2 hours. And while you're walking around, you won't generate as much body heat—so dress warm and in layers!

My kids and I may look like marshmallows, but none of them are cold. I call that a win.

I know the kids will be wearing long pants and snow jackets - layers you can barely take off if you have to pee in a public bathroom. So I made sure everyone used the bathroom before putting on warm clothes.

ZooLights opens at 5 p.m., which means you'll bring your kids home by bedtime. Avoid power struggles over pajamas by putting them in PJ's as the base layer.

This year I actually gave them new Christmas gifts right before we left for Portland ZooLights, so they were so excited to dress up! And I don't have to convince anyone to change when we get home.

Festive Light Displays That Will Brighten Oregon's 2022 Holiday Season

My kids are now 3 and 5, and my 3 year old only sat in our double stroller for a few minutes. We probably won't bring it next year. However, if your child is younger, make sure you bring a stroller.

If you are bringing a stroller, bring a blanket for each child. They will get colder if they sit instead of walking, so a soft blanket will help keep them appetizing.

This year my sister and brother went to Portland ZooLights with us, and my sister laughed as I told my hungry kids all the snack options. I carry a small cooler filled with sliced turkey, tofu chunks, peeled apple chunks, goldfish crackers, cottage cheese, fruit peels, juice pouches, bananas, granola bars, and PBJs.

I know the kids won't actually eat dinner since we're at ZooLights during regular mealtimes, so I have to feed them on the go.

I saw another family bring a picnic and eat it at a table between the African rainforest and Discovery Plaza. I think this is a great idea! (As long as it's not raining.)

One of the first things you'll see when you walk into ZooLights with your kids is a booth selling glow-in-the-dark toys. I didn't even stop long enough to see the prices (since I wasn't planning on buying for my kids!), but I'm pretty sure they were way over our budget.

If you think your kids will want to buy glow-in-the-dark toys, buy some glow-in-the-dark wands or trinkets at the Dollar Store before heading to Portland ZooLights.

Instead of standing in line, you can now buy Portland ZooLights tickets online here! The link does not work for discounted tickets ($5 per ticket), which you can receive if you use assistance programs, including WIC, Head Start, food stamps and others, or if you are a foster family.

Zoolights Will Go On This Year, As A Drive Through Experience At The Oregon Zoo

Also, keep in mind that your Oregon Zoo membership will also get you into ZooLights. (We are members of the Oregon Zoo!)

ZooLights starts at 5 and I recommend getting to the Oregon Zoo by 4:45. This will allow you to park before all the car parks are full and you have to drive back to the shuttle car park. You can then pay for parking ($3/hour) and get your ticket and then go through the gate at 5—before the crowd.

The closer you get to the end of the season at ZooLights, the busier it will be. Families squeeze holiday events into Christmas (which is another reason you should definitely use my family calendar planning tip), so put ZooLights on the schedule with kids. yours now!

Every time we find a heart. And by saying, "Go find more hearts!" we were able to keep them moving so we didn't stay up all night.

If you get all six hearts, stop by the gift shop and submit an entry for a chance to win a $75 gift card.

If your child is sensitive to light, noise or other stimuli, plan ahead. You may want to bring an imprint stroller (like our BOB stroller) and bring noise canceling headphones. Also, be aware that there are certain parts of the ZooLights loop that will activate more for children with sensory processing disorders or sensitivities.

The steam train, located at the end of the bypass (just past the Insectarium and Tiger Habitat), makes a tremendous bang when parked and when it leaves again. And the light tunnel, near Rainforest Plaza (and the bats), is bright and stimulating.

If you're like me, when you go to ZooLights with your kids, you'll be saying, "Please don't touch/trust/pull the lights" a lot. It's hard for kids to control all their little impulses, so plan to spend some time at the Oregon Zoo's sculpture playground.

Down the hill from the bats, children can climb rock bears, camels and rams. It is well lit, thanks to a wall of lights, and it really is

Yes, there are some animals at ZooLights! But keep in mind that ZooLights takes place at night (between 5-8 or 5-9pm, depending on the day), when the lights come on and the animals go to sleep.

My girls were delighted to see the bats so active. When my three-year-old exclaims, "That's because they're nocturnal!" See, vacation events in Portland can be educational!

It took us just over 1.5 hours to walk through ZooLights with the kids, but we didn't go to the elephant area. We don't take the train either. If you plan to see everything, plus the train ride and the swing, plan 2.5 hours to go through ZooLights.

Yes, although most of the choices are what you might expect in a zoo food truck: elephant ears, cotton candy, and more. There are also food carts at Portland Zoo Lights—when we arrived, Verde Cocina, Olympia Provisions, and a few other local restaurants had carts set up for the actual meals. You can also eat at the Oregon Zoo restaurant at the zoo entrance (across from the mountain goats).

For adults, you can get beer, wine and hot carbonated drinks at various places in the zoo. Check out the Portland ZooLights map for these locations, marked with a red circle with a glass of wine.
