PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, California. (May 24, 2022) - The Presidio of Monterey and Camp Roberts Fire Departments successfully worked with other agencies to contain the first in a series of multi-agency prescribed burns at Camp Roberts, California, May 4.
The team burned the 77-hectare installation area to reduce the risk of wildfires, improve the ecology of the area and improve safety, said Cory Prough, head of fire prevention, of the PoM fire department. Camp Roberts is about 100 miles south of the Presidio of San Miguel and part of it is under the command of the US Garrison PoM.

The Camp Roberts Fire Department is doing much of the coordinating with agencies including the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Five Cities Fire Authority and the Ventana Hotshots, a US Forest Service team from Los Padres National Forest, has said Prough.
Prescribed burns, done in accordance with environmental and public resource codes, are an effective way to reduce fuels such as grasses and shrubs that can cause wildfires to get out of control, Prough said.
"Fire will happen, but anything we can do on the front end before it gets there can help save lives and protect property," Prough said.
Fire Prevention Officer Matthew Read of the PoM Fire Department, who has worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 12 years and has an extensive background in fighting wildland urban interface fires, played a key role in the prescribed fire, Prough said.

The Camp Roberts Fire Department conducts several prescribed burns at Camp Roberts, but this is the first coordinated effort within a designated area at Camp Roberts, said Read, who has worked for the PoM Fire Department for five years. .
"This particular unit or area that we are burning is identified as the greatest threat based on the general wind direction and fuel load," Read said. “It's just a small piece of the pie. The idea is that in the next few years we will complete the whole circle."
When fire officials reach the end of the cycle in the next few years, they plan to start over, Read said.
Read said Camp Roberts fire officials paid close attention to the weather and identified the perfect day for the fire.
Several Fire Departments Respond To Fire At Camp Roberts
"Everything was in our favor," said Read. "A cold front came through a few days ago, so it provided enough moisture to the plants that it wasn't too much of a problem, but it was still dry enough that we could burn the plants. ."
It's important to note that prescribed burns not only have safety benefits, but also ecological benefits, Read said.
For example, prescribed burns open seed pods and return nutrients to the soil to help the next generation of native plants grow, Read said. This helps the soil to retain moisture better and become more fire resistant.
The PoM Fire Prevention Division's participation in the prescribed burn is just one part of the team's efforts to prevent fires in the area, Prough and Read said.

Through the Wildland Fire Management Working Group, they coordinated with local organizations such as the City of Monterey Fire Department and The Parks of Monterey Bay to reopen a fire road in La Mesa Village, Read said.
The division also coordinates the management of potential fuel fires at Huckleberry Hill Nature Preserve and the Ord Military Community, Read said.
"In general, a healthy forest is a forest that's resistant to fire, and that's something we're always trying to do, to protect the land so we can return it to its natural state as much as possible," Read said .
The department also does many educational activities in the community, such as fire extinguisher training. In addition, the department has a 27-foot fire safety and prevention trailer that provides hands-on training with home fire safety. SCOTTS VALLEY - On August 22, 2020, three members of the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association () firefighters from the Camp Roberts Fire Department were deployed to the CZU Lightning Complex Fire burning in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties. The Camp Roberts Fire Department is part of a four-engine task force along with CALFIRE San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay Fire Department and Atascadero Fire Department. The task force works 24-hour shifts in the Scotts Valley area.

"Our members of the Scotts Valley Fire Department are working on heavy timber and redwoods that have been weakened by the fire," said President Alan Barcelona. “These individuals, like all state workers, took state-mandated pay cuts, but battled dangerous fires and conditions to save lives and property in a fire that consumed more than 82,000 acres on August 28. We are proud of them and wish them safety and good health as they work an exhausting number of hours in dangerous conditions.”
